Joseph Kumer, known affectionately to all who work with him as "Seph," was born and adopted in the Philadelphia area. After living in West Chester for eight years, his family moved to the Pittsburgh suburb of Monroeville. There, Seph graduated from Gateway High School. During his formative years, Seph attended a Lutheran Church.

Seph earned his Bachelor’s degree in social work with a concentration in Christian ministries from Grove City College. Upon graduation, he served as Youth Director for the York Rescue Mission in York, Pennsylvania for ten years. He ran a youth center which served 400 young people each year in preschool, latchkey, teen, and summer camp ministries.

In 1989, during his time in the York area, Seph joined the Presbyterian Church (USA) and was ordained an Elder in 1991.

In 1990, God blessed Seph’s life and ministry with a wonderful partner, his wife Rhonda. Rhonda, who grew up with a Baptist background, also became a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1989. She was ordained as a Deacon in 1999.

In 1997, Seph accepted the call to join the staff at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant as Director of Youth and Family Ministries. In this position, Seph has the responsibility to work with the Ministry of Discipleship and develop the program of Christian education and youth ministry for all age levels of children and youth. Seph also oversees various ministries to families.

God has blessed Seph and Rhonda with two wonderful and active boys, Joseph and David. They have recently remarked that time does fly by, as both Joseph and David have now reached the age where they are members of the church youth group.

Seph claims that his favorite leisure activities include the opportunity to hang out with friends and family, travel, camp, enjoy theater, and explore world cultures.
